چکیده مقاله:

The BK virus a member of the Polyomaviruses family was first isolated from the urine of the kidney recipient. Infection with this virus and infection usually occurs in childhood (5-9 years) but most of the time (90%) of sera are positive and without symptoms. Polyomaviruses including the BK virus have also been suggested to be a contributing factor to some cancers in humans such as brain tumors, bone tumors, Kaposi’s sarcoma, adrenal tumors, renal carcinoma, prostate cancer, urinary tumors, genital tumors and etc. however the topic still remains controversial. In this study, we report the presence of BK specific DNA sequences in bladder cancer by PCR and Nested PCR methods. Our study results confirmed the presence of BK in 13.7% of the samples.

Polyoma BK Virus: An Oncogenic Virus?

We report a case of a 65-year-old gentleman with a history of end stage renal disease who underwent a successful cadaveric donor kidney transplant four years ago. He subsequently developed BK virus nephropathy related to chronic immunosuppressant therapy. Three years later, misfortune struck again, and he developed adenocarcinoma of the bladder.

BK virus nephropathy and other polyoma virus infections.

Polyomaviruses are mammalian (and a few avian) viruses, which appear to have coevolved with their hosts, leading to high prevalence, low morbidity, latent infections for the most part. The viruses generally have a restricted host range; 5 polyomaviruses are known to naturally infect humans (Table 1). Among them, BK virus is the most commonly encountered clinically, causing nephropathy, hemorrha...

BK virus as a potential oncovirus for bladder cancer in a renal transplant patient.

Renal transplant patients have high risk for bladder cancer. The reactivation of BK virus is common in renal transplant patients especially in the urinary tract. There was some evidence suggesting that the reactivation of BK virus (BKV) in renal transplant patients may associate with the development of bladder cancer. Here we demonstrated that a patient that had persistent elevated BKV viruria ...

BK polyoma virus infection and renal disease in non-renal solid organ transplantation

BK virus (BKV) is a non-enveloped DNA virus of the polyomaviridae family that causes an interstitial nephritis in immunosuppressed patients. BKV nephropathy is now a leading cause of chronic kidney disease and early allograft failure following kidney transplantation. It is also known to cause renal disease with a progressive decline in kidney function in non-renal solid organ transplant (NRSOT)...

Transient allograft dysfunction from immune reconstitution in a patient with polyoma BK-virus-associated nephropathy.

During the last 10 years, polyoma BK-virus associated nephropathy (PVAN) has emerged as a serious complication in renal transplant recipients [1]. Due to the establishment of an accurate non-invasive screening procedure measuring polyomavirus BK-viraemia, BK-viruria and decoy cells in urine, PVAN can be diagnosed at early stages [2]. This allows for timely therapeutic intervention, which has si...

Polyoma BK virus: an emerging opportunistic infectious agent of the human central nervous system.

BK virus, a double-stranded DNA virus, is a member of the Polyomaviridae family which is known to infect humans. Clinical evidence of disease is mostly encountered in immunosuppressed individuals such as AIDS patients or those who undergo renal or bone marrow transplantation where complications associated with BKV infection manifest commonly as a polyomavirus nephropathy or hemorrhagic cystitis...
